Alexander Semin Signs One-Year $7M Deal With Carolina

One of the most sought after free agents has finally put pen to paper with a team that few expected. Earlier today the Carolina Hurricanes announced they had signed Alexander Semin to a one-year deal worth a whopping $7 million. While it was clear early on he would not return to the Capitals as they had gave his number away for developmental camp few believed he would remain in the Southeast Divison.

Now Semin will not only have the chance of facing his former teammates six times but also take on his good friend Alexander Ovechkin for the first time in their NHL careers. Carolina took quite the gamble by making Semin the second highest paid player on its roster but should any of the “problems” that seem to follow the 28-year-old arise they only have to deal with them for one measly year.

Perhaps the change of scenery will inspire Semin to play to his highest potential, something he is often criticized for, as he looks to find the magic from 2009-10. His addition to the Canes top line is pretty terrifying should he join the Staal brothers on the wing; the trio have 567 between them. Perhaps now he will no longer be the “other Alex” and be the one Carolina can count on as they look to return to the post-season after a 3-year drought. In 469 career games, Semin has scored 197 goals, added 211 assists for 409 points.
