According to a New York’s Newsday, the New York Islanders are planning to retain the rights to goaltender Evgeni Nabokov for the 2011-2012 season. Nabokov was picked off waivers by the team after signing a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings but since the collective bargaining agreement calls for players signing a NHL-level contract to enter waivers Nabokov ended up in Long Island. However the newest Islander never donned an Islanders jersey opting to hold out in hopes he would be freed from his contract this coming off-season.

Sixth Time’s a Charm for Samsonov

(courtesy of Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)
“For me, six times was a charm.”…These must be the words, courtesy of My Cousin Vinny, that were replaying in Sergei Samsonov’s head when he got the phone call from Jim Rutherford. It’s been quite the roller coaster ride for the once highly sought after, Samsonov. After his impressive rookie campaign, Samsonov followed up the next two years with consistent numbers, and then exploded onto the scene with 70+ points.

Waive Bye-Bye to Nikolay

A 15 goal season to date is not something to scoff at in today’s NHL. However, if you score 15 goals and fail to abide by Peter Laviolette’s system, that apparently warrants subsequent benching and a waiving of your 2 million dollar contract. Now Nikolai Zherdev waits for yet another possible destination in his long road to redemption in the NHL.
From the beginning of the season, it should have been clear to the Flyers ‘higher-ups’ thought that Zherdev was a player who put his needs before the team’s. In his days with Columbus and New York, Nikolai was never talked about as a “team player.” In his first few games, Flyers fans were treated to many dazzling tricks the Ukrainian-born, Zherdev, had to offer. He used his impressive stick-handling to elude defenders and create offensive opportunities. But there is always a price to pay no matter how much talent one player possesses. Zherdev’s defensive game, inconsistent play, and, ultimately, his lack of effort, did not sit well with Flyers coach, Peter Laviolette.

How Kovy Got His Groove Back

It wasn’t so long ago that Ilya Kovalchuk and the New Jersey Devils were the laughingstock of the NHL. Losing to everyone possible while having their $100 million free agent signing showing minimal signs of his potential. Who can forget the botched shootout attempt that pretty much summed up the Devils season at that point? Although it shouldn’t happen the brunt of the criticism for the team’s lack luster play was aimed towards #17.

Evgeni Malkin To Have Knee Surgery
On Wednesday, it was announced by the Pittsburgh Penguins that Evgeni Malkin has elected to have knee surgery to repair the torn ligaments in his right knee. Malkin, who was only just making his return to the ice from a different ailment, suffered the injury when Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers awkwardly fell on his knee during a February 4th game at the Consol Energy Center. Malkin then had to be helped off the ice and headed directly to the locker room, and it was later revealed he had torn both his ACL and MCL.
The Penguins are estimating his recovery time at six months, which effectively rules him out for the season and duration of the playoffs, but expect Malkin to be ready when training camp begins in September.

Anton Volchenkov Suspended 3 Games
The A-Train has been forced to temporarily hit the breaks as word comes from the NHL hierarchy that New Jersey’s Anton Volchenkov has been given a 3 game suspension. The defenseman is suspended for his elbow on Carolina Hurricanes Zach Boychuk midway through the second period of last nights 3-2 Devils win. He will now be on head coach Jacques Lemaire’s naughty list even more so after receiving two (and only) other penalties in the game.

Capitals Sign Semin to One-Year Contract, Again
Albeit a 1-year deal, Alexander Semin got his contract amidst a contract year. DC’s other Alex inked a new deal earlier today to continue his career in the nation’s capital. Prior to his latest injury (to his hip) Semin was tied in the league for hat-tricks with 3 and finds himself third in scoring on the Caps this year. Semin last signed an extension for $6 million last year and sources claim this year’s is $6.7.

(Updated Again) Despite Signing with Wings, Nabokov Claimed by Islanders

(UPDATE Again) The Islanders have since suspended Nabokov for not reporting to the team. There have been reports of the goalie actually hanging up on GM Garth Snow having mistook him for a media outliet before having his agent return his call for him. Owner Charles Wang has also attempted to reach the netminder to no avail. So as this stalemate stands the Islanders can appeal to have Nabokov suspended through next season so stay tuned to the newest debacle on Long Island.
(UPDATE): Just a few hours after being claimed by the Islanders, word got around that Nabokov would not report to the Islanders. This could determine any future Nabby plans on having in the NHL if he doesn’t change his mind. New York is not obligated to do anything and this could just be a stalemate for both parties. It’s clear they intended for having him with the team but it appears Nabokov envisioned playing for a contender when he left the KHL last month.

Zharkov’s First Shows Hope Is Not Lost For Surging Devils
With not much to hang their hats on this season, the New Jersey Devils need to look to the future to get back to their winning ways. Coming into the season, the team was looking like a Stanley Cup contender with veteran goalie, Martin Brodeur, between the pipes, a newly signed scoring winger in Ilya Kovalchuk, and an already established “face of the franchise” in Zach Parise.
However, in the first 4 months of the season, the team has not met any of the expectations that were placed on them. Parise went down early with an injury, Brodeur was not playing like his normal “1990′s”-self, and Kovalchuk, a six time 40 goal scorer has a measly 12 goals and 25 points.

Malkin and Ovechkin headed to ASG, Dadonov Brings Skills
Evgeni Malkin and Alexander Ovechkin are headed to Raleigh later this month to feature in the league’s 58th installment of the All-Star Game. What they don’t know is whether they will be teammates or rivals come face-off on January 30th. Thanks to the league’s new format letting the two nominated captains draft their own fantasy team it’s possible Geno and Ovi would be pitted against each other in the event for the first time.
The live draft will be held on the 28th, ahead of the weekend’s event where Sidney Crosby and Jonathon Towes will select round by round who they want on their team. The schoolyard element should be a fun treat for fans as they patiently await to see who will be picked last. Seeing how Crosby is teammates with Malkin that should be a no-brainer unless the league adds a last-minute rule change forbidding teammates to play together.
