Hurricanes Make it Rain on Semin

Last night, Alexander Semin became a very rich man after the Carolina Hurricanes gave him a 5-year extension worth $35 million. Compared to most sports contracts this makes Semin a pauper, but since this is a hockey blog it’s big deal.

Alexander Semin Signs One-Year $7M Deal With Carolina

One of the most sought after free agents has finally put pen to paper with a team that few expected. Malkin Shines the Brightest as Russia Basks in Gold

(courtesy of Andre Ringuette/HHOF-IIHF Images)

The big red machine is back. In what was a case of Déjà vu for many, yesterdays 6-2 thrashing by Team Russia against an inspired Slovakian team was an ode to the Soviet times. Back then Russia was not only the most feared country in the world but also instilled fear on their opponents on the ice. You won’t find the legendary names like Tretiak or Kharlamov on the backs of today’s squad but with their performance throughout this tournament these players have the ability to become something better.

Good bye and good riddance…

The last line has been spoken, the final curtain cast, and Broadway is now a much better place seeing that Alexander Frolov won’t be parading around the Big Apple any longer.  What started out as a very solid career took a turn for the worst when Frolov signed a 1 year contract to play for the New York Rangers this season.  Hopes turned from high to dire in a matter of months and Frolov gave New Yorkers what they feared most…a lackluster effort, abysmal performances, and a waste of his 3-million dollar contract (as if Glen Sather couldn’t get blamed anymore for bad contracts…)

Comrades of the Night-Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin

It’s rare that we award the ever prestigious comrade of the night award to more than one player but such is the case for Washington’s Alex’s. The Russian duo scored both goals in DC’s opening game tonight as they renewed their hostilities with the New York Rangers to start their quest for the team’s first Stanley Cup. Ovechkin helped knot up the game in the 3rd period when stuffing in Semin’s effort past goalie Henrik Lundqvist for his 21st playoff goal.

(courtesy of Anna Armstrong)

Albeit a 1-year deal, Alexander Semin got his contract amidst a contract year. DC’s other Alex inked a new deal earlier today to continue his career in the nation’s capital. Semin last signed an extension for $6 million last year and sources claim this year’s is $6.7.

Russia’s Time to Shine at the Winter Classic

(courtesy of http://ovechkin.tumblr.com/)

There’s beating a dead horse and then there is the Alex Ovechkin vs Sidney Crosby rivalry. The NHL’s two biggest stars, rivals on the ice yadda yadda yadda. The league received much criticism when it awarded this year’s Winter Classic (tonight at 8pm NBC) to Washington and Pittsburgh with the Crosby led Pens appearing in their second Classic in the event’s short four year existence.

While the league is doing what’s best to generate interest and revenue by pitting their poster boys against one another outdoors in front of what’s expected to be 67,000 fans it leaves many who have been fans before this new rivalry feeling slightly cheated.

Geno and Ovie Take to Winter Classic Ice to Most Epic Music Ever/Semin Speaks Kind of

With the NHL’s marquee event outside(no pun intended) of the Stanley Cup just a day away, NHL.com followed both Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin onto the ice at Heinz Field ahead of the team’s first skate outdoors. Thanks to some fantastic editing both players walked onto the ice set to the same music as they made their way outside. Ovechkin would also speak to Alyonka Larionov about the importance of the game in both Russian and English.

Comrade of the Night-Alexander Semin

(courtesy of the AP)

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Alexander Semin is playing so well this season.  The great 28, who is in a contract year, is having a career year having notched 29 points, so far.  Certainly playing for a well-deserved contract come 2011, Alexander Semin exploded on both Tampa goalies today at the Verizon Center routing the Lightning, 6-0.  It only took a total of 4 minutes and 29 seconds in the 2nd period Semin to notch his 3rd hat-trick of the season and 6th overall for his career.
